Athletic Bilbao beat Atlético Madrid 0-2 in the first match on Sunday evening to move five points clear of their opponents in sixth spot. Both keepers were in action early on to save from Reyes and Toquero, and Forlán struck a shot on the turn just over the bar. Late in the first half the visitors were awarded a penalty after Perea pulled down Llorente, the defender picking up a red card for the foul. But Llorente fired his spot kick wide, and Forlán could well have given the home side the lead when he broke free in front of Iraizoz only to shoot wide of the target. With the first half coming to a close though, Toquero got free of his marker to connect with Iraola's long pass and steer a shot wide of De Gea. And twenty minutes in to the second half the pair combined again for Toquero to slide home his second of the night. Another disappointing result for Atlético, and at the final whistle the few fans who were left in the ground booed off their own players.
