Deportivo are only five points above the bottom three after a 1-0 defeat at Hércules, and with Atlético, Barcelona and Valencia to play in their last five games they are by no means safe. The Alicante based team themselves desperately needed points to escape the drop zone, and the game got off to a nervous start, with neither side really creating clear cut chances in the first half. Early in the second half though Thiago Gomes tested Aranzubia with a long shot, and with an hour on the clock the Portuguese midfielder ran in from behind to head in Kiko Femenía's cross following a rapid counterattack. Lotina reacted bringing on Adrián, who managed a couple of timid shots at goal, but Trézéguet should have put the result beyond doubt when he shot wide with the goal at his mercy later on.
