Málaga ensured another season in the top flight after a 2-0 victory against Sporting Gijón. The Andalusians had won their last four matches, and after a frenetic start Baptista opened the scoring with an acrobatic scissor kick, his seventh goal in five games. There was a blow for the locals when top scorer Rondón limped off injured before the interval, and half time substitute Barral missed a good chance to equalise after the restart. But a few minutes later Eliseu latched on to a Seba return pass to score the second and take his side two points above the Asturians in the table.
