Mallorca took advantage of poor results by the teams immediately above them to move up to seventh after a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, and they now have a good shot at the Europa League spots. Rayo themselves were looking to pick up points after a run of four defeats in a row, and they totally dominated the first half, with Michu shooting just wide, Tamudo hitting the post and Aouate having to make a string of saves. After the interval though the islanders regained control, and with an hour on the clock Chori Castro ran on to Tomás Pina's through ball to steer a shot past Cobeño. Diego Costa had a penalty appeal turned down soon afterwards, but Alfaro, Castro and Hemed all could have added to the lead later on. Rayo's defeat means that they are still in the struggle to avoid the drop, and with tricky games coming up against Sevilla and Granada they are by no means safe.
