Real Sociedad beat third placed Valencia 1-0 in the opening match of the weekend to end the season safely up in eleventh spot. Unai Emery was in charge of the Ches for the last time, and in the absence of Soldado, he gave the centre forward role to Aduríz. The Basque striker headed against the bar early on, with Illarra heading just over at the other end and Vela bringing a good save out of Diego Alves, Aduríz just failed to find the target again a couple of times either side of half time, and Pablo hit the post soon after the restart. Aranburu was playing his last match before retiring, and Alves prevented him from celebrating it with a goal. But soon afterwards Griezmann got on the end of Xabi Prieto's cross to score what was to prove the only goal of the game, and a few minutes later Aranburu went off to a standing ovation, knowing he had captained the side to another successful season.
