A best ever 53 points for Rayo Vallecano, although they fell a place short of qualifying for the Europa League after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Athletic Bilbao. Things swung in their favour early on when Aduríz was sent off for a second bookable offence, and soon afterwards Franco Vázquez opened the scoring after getting behind the defence to head in a long José Carlos free kick. With half an hour on the clock though Susaeta equalised after he was set up by Ibai Gómez (who had hit the post earlier on), and just two minutes after the restart Ibai played on a De Marcos cross for Aurtenetxe to score a second. Gorka Iraizoz did well to save from Arbilla a few minutes later, but the keeper was at fault a couple of minutes after that when he dropped a Trashorras corner on to Piti's head to allow the striker to save a point for his side. Rayo still have a chance of making it in to Europe if Málaga's appeal against their ban is unsuccessful, although Rayo themselves will have to try and overturn their own ban as well for them to qualify.
