Second Division - Day 15

Elche extended their lead at the top of the second division after a 0-1 victory over second placed Girona on Saturday evening. The Catalans were unbeaten at home this season, but they went behind in the eighth minute when Powel turned the ball past Manu Herrera from close to goal after a long free kick was headed back in to the six yard box. After that though the locals made all the play, Jofre having a strike ruled out for a dubious offside, and David García, Jandro and Jofre all wasting chances. A defence which has only let in eight goals all season held fast after the break however, and the visitors almost added to the lead on a quick breakaway in the last minute. Later in the evening Villarreal once again failed to close the gap on the teams above them after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lugo. Last season there were two divisions between these sides, and for the first half an hour so that's what it seemed, with Bruno missing a good chance before Cani latched on to Javi Venta's pass to beat Yoel. Uche came close to a second shortly before the break, but the visitors rallied after the restart, and Oscar Díaz saved a point for his side with the equaliser following a rapid counter-attack a few minutes in to the second half.

Sabadell are back up in to the play-off spots pending Sunday's games after a 1-1 draw with Mirandés. The visitors clearly came to the Nova Creu Alta looking to defend and try to get something on a quick breakaway, and with only a quarter of an hour gone they did just that after Cases sent Díaz de Cerio away to beat Nauzet. The Catalans pushed further forward after that, and Goitia had to make two or three saves before he was finally beaten by Lanza after Collantes set him up a couple of minutes before the break. Any hope of a victory though for Lluis Carreras's side ended when substitute Oscar Ramírez picked up two bookings within four minutes of coming on. Las Palmas are now only a point behind Sabadell after a 3-0 victory over Córdoba. The Canary Islanders started the day two points behind their opponents in the table, and they almost went behind when Rennella hit the bar early on. Vitolo put the locals ahead though with just under half an hour gone after picking up a return pass from Dani Castellano, and the young forward combined with Thievy twice in the second half to complete his hat-trick.

The win takes Las Palmas level on points with Recreativo, who were beaten 1-0 by bottom club Guadalajara. Carlos Terrazas's side won at home for the first time a fortnight ago, and once again they went ahead with an individualist goal by Azkorra, his third in as many games. Local keeper Toño Ramírez was hardly troubled until close to half time when he did well to save a Rubio free kick, but Recre were left with ten men when Jonathan Valle picked up a second booking on the hour mark, and although numbers were evened up near the end when Erice was also shown two yellow cards, it came too late to change the result. Guadalajara move off the foot of the table above Hércules, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Sporting Gijón. Both teams started the season amongst the group of favourites for promotion, but with a third of the season gone they are both struggling, despite a change of manager at the two clubs. The goals came later on in the first half, David Rodríguez giving the Asturians the lead after picking up a through ball from Trejo, and Sarpong equalising for the locals after controlling a long ball before beating Juan Pablo. Barcelona B returned to sixth spot in the table after a convincing 4-1 victory over a poor Racing Santander on Sunday lunch-time. Luis Alberto hit the post before Deulofeu opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Bouazza brought down Patric in the twelfth minute. And by half time Eusebio's side were three up, Lobato picking up Rafinha's assist to fire a shot past Dani Sotres, and Deulofeu scoring a goal which Messi would have been proud of, dribbling past three defenders before rounding the keeper to score. Early in the second half Deulofeu set up Luis Alberto for the fourth, and Koné got a consolation goal for the Cantabrians a few minutes later after picking up two rebounds off defenders before beating Masip. It was a first win in five games for Eusebio's side, and a third defeat in a row for Racing, who stay in the bottom four as a result. Coach Fabri may be the next to go. (25.11.12)

Almería return to second spot in the table after a 3-2 win over Murcia on Sunday evening. After two scoreless draws, Xavi Gracía's side had given up their place to Girona. But with only half an hour on the clock they were already two up, Aleix Vidal setting up Soriano for both goals, the first with less than a minute gone. Saúl got one back in the first minute of the second half though, and although Casquero restored the two goal cushion, Molinero closed the gap again minutes later. Murcia were left with ten men for the last twenty minutes when Català went off injured with all three substitutions made, but even so it took a couple of saves from local keeper Esteban to maintain the lead later on. Alcorcón stay three points behind Almería after they beat Xerez 2-4. The Madrid based side went ahead twice, Riera heading the first on the half hour mark from a Fernando Sales cross, and Sales getting the second himself early in the second half. However the locals equalised both times, first through Alvaro Rey and then through Maldonado, and it was only in the last ten minutes that Riera and Kike added two more to hand the Andalusians their first defeat in nine games.

A 2-4 scoreline as well in the Alfredo di Stefano stadium, where Numancia beat Real Madrid Castilla to move two points above their hosts in the table. Natalio opened the scoring for the visitors in only the second minute, but Oscar Planas connected with a Jesé cross to equalise midway through the first half, and Borja García put the youngsters in front at the start of the second half. However Natalio headed in a long corner soon afterwards to make it all square again, and Del Pino and Regalón both got on the end of Julio Alvarez free kicks in the last quarter of an hour to give the Soria based side their first away win of the season. Ponferradina are level with Numancia in mid-table after they beat Huesca 2-1 in their Toralín stadium. The visitors went ahead first though when Tariq connected with Camacho's cross to beat Santamaría, and it was not until the second half that Mayordomo headed in Jonathan's centre to equalise. Acorán picked up a return pass from Yuri though five minutes later to turn the scoreline around, and Huesca's challenge ended when David lópez was sent off for a second bookable offence soon afterwards.
