Real Madrid’s game against the newly promoted Córdoba was scheduled for Monday night as Ancelotti’s side had played the second leg of the Super Cup on Friday, and although they ran out 2-0 winners in the end, they did look lethargic at times. It was the Andalusians’ first match in the top flight in 42 years, and a team packed with new signings held their own for much of the time. Juan Carlos had to save from Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos early on though, and on the half hour mark Benzema opened the scoring with a powerful header from a Kroos corner. Xisco and Ronaldo both had strikes ruled out for offside after the restart, and the result was in doubt until Ronaldo beat the keeper again with an impressive last minute strike.
