Real Sociedad climbed up safely to mid-table after a 1-0 victory over Espanyol on Sunday evening. The visitors were still reeling after being knocked out of the cup by Real’s neighbours Athletic on Wednesday, but Sergio García tested Rulli a couple of times early on. Xabi Prieto headed a free kick wide in reply, but with eight minutes to go to the break a lapse of attention by Kiko Casilla gifted the ball to Canales, who gratefully fired a shot back into the empty net. Chory Castro had a penalty appeal turned down after the interval and Casilla had to save a couple of times from Agirretxe, and Stuani and Caicedo could only steer headers straight at Rulli when presented with chances later on. A week to forget for Sergio González’s side, but they still remain in tenth spot, two points above their hosts in the table.
