If Athletic Bilbao can beat Barcelona in next weekend’s Copa del Rey final they are assured one of the Europa League places, but they hedged their bets by beating the already qualified sixth placed Villarreal 4-0 to finish seventh, which gives them a European ticket anyway. Aduríz opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24 th minute after Jokic brought him down in the area, and just three minutes later Iraola (playing his last match in the San Mamés stadium before retiring) ran on to an Aduríz pass to lift a shot past Juan Carlos. Beñat made it three a few minutes later with a free kick from outside of the area, and although Herrerín had to be at his best to keep out Moreno and Mario, Aduríz made sure of the result with a fourth goal on the hour mark, making him the first division’s top Spanish goalscorer. A great end to the league season for the Basque side, and they can now go into next Saturday’s cup final knowing that their place in Europe is assured whatever the result.
