Second Division - Day 23

Elche beat second placed Girona 1-0 in the Friday night game, the defeat ending a run of four wins in a row for the Catalans. Both teams had chances, but with four minutes to go substitute Rober Correa headed in a Fabián centre to give the home side their first victory in 2017. (27.01.17)

Leaders Levante saw their run of six wins in a row come to an end when they were beaten 2-0 by Alcorcón on Saturday evening. David Rodríguez put the locals ahead from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Toño midway through the first half, and shortly before the break Sergio Postigo turned Kadir’s cross in to his own net to extend the lead. The Madrid based side were left with ten men when Pablo Pérez was sent off for a hard tackle on an opponent with twelve minutes to go, but they held on for a win which takes then safely up to mid-table. Valladolid meanwhile are up to fifth after they came back from a goal down to beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1. Manucho poked an Aguirre centre past Pau Torres to open the scoring in the third minute, but José Arnáiz levelled the scores on the hour mark, and Juan Villar got the winner soon afterwards following a quickly taken free kick to leave the visitors on the brink of the drop zone.

The other three games on Saturday ended all square, Tenerife holding on to sixth spot after a 0-0 draw at Sevilla Atlético. The result leaves the youngsters still two points behind the Canary Islanders in the table, level with Reus, who drew 1-1 at Mirandés. Guarrotxena put the locals in front with a long shot shortly before the break, but Querol connected with a Campins cross to save a point for the Catalans with seven minutes to go. Mirandés stay in the bottom four, two points above Nàstic, who climb off the bottom of the table pending Almería’s game on Sunday after a 0-0 draw against Huesca. (28.01.17)

None of the top four teams were able to win this weekend, third placed Cádiz the only ones to even to get a point after a 0-0 draw at Mallorca on Sunday evening. Earlier in the day second placed Getafe were beaten 2-0 by Numancia, Ruíz de Galarreta giving the locals the lead with a long shot on the quarter hour mark and then setting up Pablo Valcarce for the second midway through the second half. Lugo stay two points below the play-off spots after they drew 1-1 at Zaragoza, Fede Vico equalizing for the visitors in injury time after Cani had given the Maños the lead with an hour gone. Four teams are level with them in the table though, including Oviedo, who lost 3-0 at Almería. New signing Borja Fernández got the opener early on for the hosts, and Quique and Gaspar added two more in the last ten minutes to take the Andalusians off the bottom of the table. They are now level on points with UCAM Murcia, who drew 1-1 at Córdoba. Rodri put the locals in front in the seventh minute, but a Héctor Rodás own goal levelled the scores with twenty minutes to go, and the Andalusians ended with ten men when Edu Ramos was sent off near the end.
