Real Madrid tied up the league title this Wednesday, but Messi got the edge on Cristiano Ronaldo for the Pichichi prize after he scored three to Ronaldo's one. The difference perhaps was in the penalties - Messi scored two and Ronaldo missed one - but with two games still to go it is not over just yet. Both are already assured of the highest two tallies in the history of the league, and another record which fell was Gerd "Torpedo" Müller's European best ever of 67 in all club competitions in a season - Messi now has 68. However his team-mates have not been helping him as much as Ronaldo's, with Higuaín scoring again this week to move on to 26 for the season, and Benzema already on 31. Barça's second highest scorer is Fàbregas on 15, and he hasn't scored in the league since week 18.

Below the top two the race for the remaining European spots is still wide open, although Valencia did at least ensure themselves a Champions League spot for next year after a 4-0 victory over Osasuna, with Aduríz and Jonas scoring a brace each in the last fifteen minutes of the match. Elsewhere though Negredo's early goal for Sevilla was not enough to prevent a 1-2 defeat against city rivals Betis, and Atlético Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad thanks to an injury time strike from Carlos Vela. Getafe also drew 1-1 with bottom club Racing Santander, Miku getting the goal from the penalty spot for the locals, and Levante lost 1-0 to Zaragoza, with Koné "conveniently" absent due to a knee injury which prevents him from reaching the fatal 18th goal of the season (see our week 36 report for the reason why).
