The all-Spanish Europa League final this week between Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, with Falcao netting twice and Diego adding a third late on to help Atlético win the trophy for the second time in three years. It was the second Europa League final in a row that Falcao had won it for his side (the Colombian striker scored the only goal for Porto last year), and he also finished top scorer in the competition both seasons, which nobody had ever done before. Nice to talk about someone else for a change rather than Messi and Ronaldo, although they of course take the headlines in what has been an amazing year. Messi didn't score in his last game (although he does still have the Spanish cup final to come), but Ronaldo got one of Real Madrid's four against Mallorca, taking him on to 60 for the season in all club competitions. Messi though has an incredible 72, of which 50 were in the league, which we believe has only ever been bettered (in the major leagues at least) by the legendary Dixie Dean, who scored 60 for Everton in 1927-28. Benzema was also on the scoresheet as Real Madrid took their league tally for the year to 121, smashing the all-time record of 107, and Barça also beat the record, moving on to 114 after a 2-2 draw at Betis. Rubén Castro got both goals for the Andalusians, and elsewhere Stuani scored for Racing in their last match before being relegated, and (who else) Falcao got Atlético Madrid's winner to send Villarreal down as well. It was not enough though to overtake Málaga for the last Champions League spot, and Atlético will once again be playing in the Europa League next season (14.05.12)

PS Messi scored again in Barcelona's 3-0 cup final win against Athletic Bilbao, taking his total for the season to 73. It is hard to see anyone breaking that record in a long time, unless it's either Messi himself or his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The other two cup final goals were scored by Pedro, who started the season badly, but is putting in a late push for a place in Del Bosque's Euro 2012 squad. (26.05.12)
