Another disastrous week for La Liga sides in Europe, neither Málaga nor Barcelona finding the net in their visits to Porto and AC Milan respectively. With Valencia and Real Madrid also clocking up poor results the week before, we may be left without a Spanish team in the last 16 of the tournament for the first time in donkey's ages! Atlético Madrid did at least score on Thursday, but Falcao's late strike was not enough to prevent them being dumped out of the Europa League. Only Levante continue in the competition, Martins scoring against Olympiacos to round off an aggregate 4-0 win.

With important Copa del Rey matches coming up midweek, the four semi-finalists all rested key players. Even Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench at Deportivo, but after Riki gave the Galicians the lead, the big man came on to set up the winner for Higuaín. Barcelona also found themselves behind against Sevilla, but second half strikes from David Villa and Leo Messi turned the scoreline around. It was a record fifteenth consecutive league game that Messi had scored in, and he has now netted against every team in the first division this season except for Celta, who Barça still have to visit at the end of March. Only one player has ever scored against everybody in one campaign, and that was Cristiano Ronaldo last year!

Elsewhere Falcao converted a penalty against Espanyol to maintain Atlético's 100% home record in the league, and in any of the PRAM years (i.e. pre Ronaldo and Messi), his 21 goals would virtually have ensured him the Pichichi title. Sights though have been set a lot higher with those two around. Jonas got two for Valencia to cancel out early strikes by Zaragoza's Apoño and Postiga, and Carlos Vela clocked up his eleventh of the season as Real Sociedad beat Basque rivals Athletic on Friday evening. There was a timely return to form for Iago Aspas as Celta recorded a much needed win against Granada, and Betis finally got their scoring boots on after four games without finding the net, Jorge Molina starting things off in the first minute as Pepe Mel's side beat regional neighbours Málaga 3-0.
