A great week for Spanish sides in the Champions League, with Barcelona and Málaga both overturning first leg defeats to join Real Madrid in the quarter finals. Messi once again led an epic comeback against AC Milan, his two goals coupled with strikes by David Villa and Jordi Alba giving Barcelona a 4-0 win in on the night. And the following day Málaga beat Porto 2-0, Isco starting things off and Santa Cruz heading a second after the break. Spain's participation in the Europa League this season ended though after Levante were knocked out on Thursday, the game in Moscow against Rubin Kazan ending like the first leg without goals, but the Russian team scoring twice in extra time to go through.

So to the weekend, and the goals returned after last weekend's drought, the 34 scored in the ten matches double the tally from the week before. Messi netted two more against Rayo Vallecano to take his total for the season to an amazing 55, thereby extending his scoring record in the league to eighteen straight games, and if he gets another in the next match against Celta that will mean he has scored against all the first division sides in a row! David Villa set up both goals, returning the favour to Messi who gifted him the opener, and Tamudo got a late consolation for Rayo on his return to his home town.

Second placed Real Madrid went two better than the leaders though with a 5-2 win against Mallorca on Saturday, Higuaín (2), Ronaldo and Benzema amongst the scorers, and Atlético Madrid stay a point behind their city rivals after a 0-2 victory at Osasuna, Diego Costa celebrating his call up by Brazil with a brace. Elsewhere the race for the Zarra prize (top scoring Spanish player) hotted up, Valencia's Soldado moving on to fifteen after scoring along with Jonas against Betis, and Negredo getting one of four against Zaragoza to take his tally to fourteen. Depor's Riki is still in the running as well though after he helped himself to his eleventh of the season in Friday night's vital win against regional neighbours Celta. (19.03.13)
