Wins for three out of Spain's four Champions League sides this week, with Fàbregas heading the only goal for a Messi-less Barcelona in a narrow win at Celtic, and Godín and Turan scoring as Atlético Madrid came back from a goal down to beat Porto 1-2. All of that was on Tuesday, and the following day Real Madrid cruised to a 4-0 victory over Copenhagen, with two each for Cristiano Ronaldo and Di María. Ronaldo has now scored five in only two CL games! Real Sociedad took a late cropper though at Bayer Leverkusen, losing 2-1 to the German side in injury time after Vela had levelled the scores earlier on, and their only hope now is to get something from the upcoming double header against Manchester United!

Good results on Thursday as well in the Europa League, Valencia beating Russia's Kuban Krasnodar 0-2 with goals by Alcácer and Feghouli, Sevilla also winning 2-0 against Freiburg thanks to a Perotti penalty and a strike by Bacca, and Betis drawing 1-1 at Rijeka, Cedrick getting the goal for the Andalusians.

Messi was still out at the weekend, but with Alexis scoring twice and Xavi and Neymar on target as well against Valladolid Barcelona hardly missed him. Javi Guerra did get the first goal of the game however, even though it ended 4-1. Diego Costa took advantage of Messi's absence though to move ahead of him in the race for the league "Pichichi", a brace against Celta taking him to ten for the season in the first eight games. No wonder Spain want to draft him in to their squad!

Ronaldo edged past Messi as well on an all-club-competitions basis, his last second winner at Levante rounding off a Houdini style escape act after Real Madrid were losing with three minutes to go. Up to that point Villarreal had overtaken Ancelotti's side in the table, Giovani on target again as the "Yellow Submarine" beat Granada 3-0 on Friday evening. An injury time winner too by Sevilla's Rakitic in a 2-1 win over La Liga's unluckiest side Almería (if games finished ten minutes earlier they would now be sixth rather than bottom!), Gameiro starting things off for the locals and ex Sevilla striker Rodri equalizing a few minutes later. Maybe next time Almería could get their driver to park his bus in front of the goal for those last ten minutes! (07.10.13)
