No Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi this week as both superstars sat out their respective injuries, but whilst Real Madrid managed two wins and eight goals without their man, Barcelona fell to their first two defeats of the season missing theirs. Madrid were in fact the only one of the Spanish teams to win their Champions League tie midweek, Bale, Arbeloa, Di María and Isco the scorers in a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray. Barça lost 2-1 at Ajax though, Xavi's second half penalty not enough to prevent defeat, and Atlético Madrid dropped points for the first time after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Zenit, Adrián putting Simeone's side ahead but Alderweireld scoring in his own net later on. All three are already sure of a place in the knock-out stage though, but Real Sociedad can't even qualify for the consolation prize of the Europa League after they were beaten 4-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Three La Liga teams are in to the last 32 of the Europa League, although again Valencia were the only winners, Dani Parejo getting the goal in a 0-1 victory at Swansea. Sevilla could only draw 1-1 against Estoril, Gameiro's early strike cancelled out in the last minute by a feisty Portuguese side, and Betis lost 1-0 at Olympique Lyon, a result which handed top spot to the French team.

Bets are already off anyone but the top three winning the league this season, but which one will take the title in the end? Only three points separate them after this weekend's games, leaders Barcelona falling to that second defeat in five days at Athletic Bilbao thanks to a late strike by Muniain. Meanwhile Atlético Madrid had no problems seeing off Elche in the first match on Saturday, Koke and Diego Costa getting the goals in a 0-2 win which takes them just behind Barça on goal difference, and third placed Real Madrid notched up four more against Valladolid, Bale stepping up to the plate in Ronaldo's absence to score a "perfect hat-trick" (one header, one with the right foot and one with the left), as well as setting up Benzema for the other. There was a hat-trick as well for Valencia's Jonas in a ten minute period either side of half time of the match against Osasuna, and elsewhere Sevilla's deadly duo Bacca and Gameiro were on target in a 1-2 victory over Granada, and Griezmann got his ninth in as many games as Real Sociedad recovered from their Champions League humiliation to beat Espanyol 1-2.
