Cristiano Ronaldo extended his lead at the top of the Pichichi chart this weekend, the Portuguese striker starting things off as Madrid beat Levante 3-0 on Sunday to stay in top spot. Atlético Madrid had momentarily squeezed past them in the rankings after a 0-2 victory at Celta on Saturday evening, David Villa stepping in for the suspended Diego Costa to get both goals for his team. Barcelona suffered from “international-itis” though, a starting eleven full of players who had midweek country commitments looking tired as they lost 1-0 at struggling Valladolid on Saturday afternoon.

Some interesting games elsewhere though as several teams fight for the remaining European spots, Aduríz saving an important point for fourth placed Athletic Bilbao at Valencia with a second half penalty after youngster Paco Alcácer had given the locals the lead. Sevilla closed in on the top six with a 1-3 win at regional neighbours Almería, Bacca and Gameiro amongst the scorers, but Villarreal slipped up after losing 2-0 at Granada, El-Arabi netting the second to take his side clear of the danger zone. Meanwhile Betis are firmly anchored down at the bottom, although they haven’t given up hope just yet, Rubén Castro on target as the Andalusians beat fellow strugglers Getafe 2-0. (11.03.14)
