Ronaldo has equalled Messi’s best ever tally of fourteen goals in a Champions League season after scoring the last of three in a 3-0 quarter final victory over Borussia Dortmund! The German side actually knocked Madrid out of the competition last season at the semi-final stage, but first half strikes by Bale and Isco have virtually ensured Ancelotti’s side a place in the last four. If they do get through there will definitely by two Liga teams in the semis, but which one would be joining Madrid is still in the balance after Barcelona and Atlético Madrid drew 1-1 in the first leg of their fratricidal clash. Diego got the vital away goal for the visitors, but Neymar kept Barça in the tie with a second half equalizer. Two Spanish teams in the Europa League as well, although both had poor results in Thursday’s quarter final first legs, Valencia losing 3-0 at Basel, and Sevilla beaten 1-0 at Porto.

With Ronaldo and Diego Costa aggravating injuries in those midweek matches, both were rested at the weekend,. But Messi did line up for Barça against bottom club Betis, and he was charged with taking two penalties, scoring from the first, and knocking in the rebound on the second after the keeper saved. A strike from Rubén Castro put the result in doubt though until late on. Tata Martino’s side remain a point behind leaders Atlético however, Raúl García standing in for Costa to score the only goal (albeit with a surreptitious push on his marker) in a 1-0 win over Villarreal. Meanwhile Madrid didn’t miss Ronaldo in what on paper was a difficult visit to Real Sociedad, Bale on target as his side ran out 0-4 winners in the end.

Elsewhere Athletic Bilbao consolidated fourth spot with a 1-2 win at Levante on Monday, Aduríz getting both of the goals, although Sevilla stay six points behind them after they defeated Espanyol 4-1, Gameiro netting a brace and Rakitic wrapping things up, with Sergio García replying for the Catalans from the penalty spot. Alberto Bueno scored twice for Rayo and Oriol Riera once for Osasuna as both teams moved closer to safety, but Granada are back in to the danger zone, El-Arabi’s late strike of little use as the Andalusians lost 4-1 at regional neighbours Málaga.
