Only one goal between the three Spanish sides in this week’s Champions League ties, but what an important one it was, Koke’s strike knocking Barcelona out of the competition and taking Atlético Madrid through to the semi-finals for the first time in 40 years! Real Madrid came in to their tie with Borussia Dortmund thinking that their three goal cushion from the first leg was more than enough to see them through, but it was a close call in the end as the German team ran out 2-0 winners on the night. The two Liga sides avoided each other in the semi-final draw though, opening up the chance of an all-Madrid final next month.

That took us to Thursday, with the two Spanish teams seemingly down and out after their first leg ties in the Europa League. However both fought back to overturn their matches, Valencia beating Basel 5-0 after half an hour’s extra time, and Sevilla winning 4-1 against Porto. The Ches in particular produced an incredible performance against the Swiss side in the Mestalla stadium, youth international Paco Alcácer completing a hat-trick near the end to take his side through to a semi-final meeting with the Andalusians. They in turn though raced in to a three goal lead within the first half hour against their Portuguese rivals, Rakitic converting a penalty and Vitolo and Bacca adding two more, and Gameiro wrapped things up late on.

Barcelona’s woes continued in to the weekend, a 1-0 defeat at Granada throwing away the advantage they had in the league as well. Atlético didn’t let up though, Godín and Diego Costa scoring at Getafe to take Simeone’s side three points clear of Real Madrid at the top. Madrid themselves pushed Barça down to third after a 4-0 win over struggling Almería, Di María, Bale, Isco and Morata the scorers in the Bernabeu stadium.

The top three are already sure of their places in next season’s Champions League, but the fourth spot is still open, Athletic Bilbao maintaining their six point lead over the rest with a 3-0 win over Málaga, Aduríz helping himself to a brace for the second week in a row. Sevilla stay fifth after beating city rivals Betis 0-2, Gameiro getting both of their goals, and Villarreal are up to sixth thanks to a last minute strike by Perbet against Levante. Real Sociedad are still just a point behind Villarreal though after they drew 2-2 at Celta, Griezmann one of the scorers, and Larrivey was on target as Rayo Vallecano edged a step closer to safety with a 2-2 draw at Espanyol.
