Leo Messi wrote his name permanently in the history books after becoming the leading goalscorer in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Messi set up Luis Suárez for his first goal for the club before helping himself to a hat-trick (with his weaker right foot!) against Apollon, taking his tally for the competition to 74. And all of that just four days after he passed Zarra’s total of 251 goals in La Liga with another hat-trick! Still only 27, it would appear that reports that he already is past his best are a little premature! Messi of course has to share the limelight with his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, and he moved level with Raúl’s 71 Champions League goals as well after getting the winner for Real Madrid at Basel. The question now is, “which one will be the first to a hundred”?

There was another hat-trick midweek too for a Liga striker, Mandzukic on target as Atlético made sure of their place in the knock-out stage with a 4-0 win over Olympiacos. Raúl García was the other scorer there. And Athletic Bilbao are finally getting it together this season, San José scoring the only goal as the Basque side beat Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1. That of course came too late to prevent them from being knocked out of the competition, but it did put them well on track for the consolation prize of a place in the Europa League. Unfortunately the success of the Spanish teams didn’t spill over in to Thursday’s Europa League games, Sevilla losing 2-0 at Feyenoord, and Villarreal being held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach after strikes by Cheryshev and Vietto were cancelled out. Both clubs are still well placed to reach the knock-out rounds however.

Neither Messi nor Ronaldo managed to score in the league at the weekend (in Ronaldo’s case for the first time in almost seven months!), but both of their teams won, Busquets getting a last minute goal for Barça at Valencia, and Benzema and Bale on target for Real Madrid against Málaga. Madrid stay top after a club record sixteenth straight win in all competitions, and Sevilla took advantage of Valencia’s defeat to move up to fourth after they beat Granada 5-1, Bacca netting twice and M’bia also on the scoresheet. Elsewhere Vietto and Uche got the goals as Villarreal won 0-2 at bottom club Córdoba, a result which takes them up to sixth, and Carlos Vela notched up a hat-trick for Real Sociedad against Elche in David Moyes’s first game in charge at the Anoeta stadium.
