Two goals from ex Liverpool striker Luis Suárez gave Barcelona an excellent 1-2 victory at Machester City in the Tuesday night Champions League game, although Messi will be ruing a last minute penalty miss which could have wrapped things up completely for Luis Enrique’s side. Worse news for Atlético Madrid though, a 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen leaving them with a lot to do in the second leg in three weeks time. Lots of goals in Thursday night’s Europa League games, although not all in favour of La Liga teams. Sevilla and Villarreal did get through, the firmer beating Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-3 with a goal from Bacca and two from Vitolo, and Villarreal winning 1-3 at Salzburg, Vietto scoring twice and setting up Giovani for the third late on. Athletic Bilbao are out though after they lost 2-3 at home to Torino, strikes by Iraola and De Marcos not enough to prevent defeat. Bad luck in the draw for the last 16 however, with Sevilla and Villarreal being paired together.

Messi and Ronaldo kept up their fight at the weekend, the former scoring in Barça’s 1-3 win at Granada on Saturday, and the latter replying with a penalty in Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Villarreal on Sunday. Luis Suárez was also on target in Barça’s match, and Gerard Moreno got the equalizer for Villarreal which leaves just two points between the top two. The star of the weekend however was undoubtedly Rayo Vallecano’s Alberto Bueno, who scored four goals in just fifteen minutes against Levante, making him La Liga’s top scoring Spanish player this season. Alvaro Vázquez also netted twice for Getafe, although his team were beaten 3-2 by Málaga in the end. (04.03.15)
