Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi took their battle back into Europe this week, Ronaldo starting things off scoring a vital away goal for Real Madrid in a 2-1 defeat at Juventus in Tuesday evening’s semi-final first leg. That took him past his arch rival to a record 76 goals in the Champions League, but it only took Messi 24 hours to go past him again after netting twice and then setting up Neymar for a third in an impressive 3-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich. The following day Sevilla took a big step towards defending their Europa League title after a 3-0 win over Fiorentina, Aleix Vidal scoring a goal in each half and then helping super-sub Gameiro wrap things up later on.

Barcelona appear to be heading for the league title though after they opened up a four point gap over second placed Real Madrid. Luis Enrique’s side beat Real Sociedad 2-0, with second half strikes by Neymar and Pedro, but Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia, goals by Pepe and Isco after the break at least saving a point after Paco Alcácer and Javi Fuego had given the Ches a 0-2 lead. Nuno’s side still have a chance of catching third placed Atlético Madrid, although they remain four points adrift after Atleti drew 2-2 at Levante. Barral was on the scoresheet for the locals, possibly his last goal for them before moving on to Málaga, but Fernando Torres saved a point for the visitors late on.

Sevilla stay three points behind Valencia in the fight for fourth place however after they drew 1-1 at Celta, Gameiro’s early strike not enough to give them a victory. The Andalusians do have a second option to make it to the Champions League though if they can win the Europa League this year. Athletic Bilbao also have two chances of making it back to Europe as well, either via the Copa del Rey or finishing seventh in the league (or even eighth if Sevilla win through), although they drop behind Málaga after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Deportivo, Lopo saving a last second point for the Galicians after Aduríz had given the hosts the lead. Espanyol are also in the running for those spots too, goals by Sergio García and Stuani at struggling Eibar on Friday evening taking them level with the Athletic on points. (12.05.15)
