Funny, last year ended with a record high, and this one began with a record low? Maybe it builds up during the season? Whatever the case only 12 goals were scored in all, and 4 of those came on Monday, when Eibar beat Granada 1-3 to go top of the table for the first time ever! Neither Messi nor Ronaldo were on the scoresheets, which must be something of a first, although Luis Suárez, Griezmann and the returning Roberto Soldado did get off the mark, along with the likes of Rubén Castro and Iago Aspas.

There were plenty of goals at least in the other tournaments which kicked off prior to La Liga week one, Barcelona beating Sevilla 5-4 in a thrilling European Super Cup in Georgia, with Messi netting two free kicks, and Pedro getting the winner in extra time. Pity he is off to Chelsea though, so we won’t see his name on our charts any more. A few days later Athletic Bilbao surprised Barcelona, winning the Spanish Super Cup with a 5-1 aggregate score, Aduríz getting a hat-trick in the first leg in the San Mamés, and cancelling out Messi’s opener in the return match. The Basque side were also in action in the Europa League qualifiers, Eraso marking his debut with both goals against Inter Bakú in the first tie, and Sabin and Kike Sola on target in the first leg of the play-off round at Zilina. They lost that one 3-2 though, and have to turn things around next Thursday if they are to continue in the competition. Meanwhile Valencia started their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Monaco in the first leg of their qualifier, Rodrigo, Dani Parejo and Feghouli the scorers. Their return match is tonight. (25.08.15)
