Real Madrid had no problems seeing off Roma in their midweek Champions League match, Ronaldo scoring his thirteenth of the current European campaign, and James rounding off a 4-0 aggregate victory later on. Four La Liga teams in action on Thursday in the Europa League, Raúl García heading the only goal to give Athletic Bilbao a 1-0 first leg advantage over fellow Spaniards Valencia. Bakambu scored twice to give Villarreal a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, and defending champions Sevilla drew 0-0 at Basel, who will be hosting this year’s final.

Barcelona will be in action in Europe next week, and they rested top scorer Luis Suárez for their match against Getafe. They still ran out 6-0 winners though, Neymar netting twice and Messi on the scoresheet to stay eight points clear at the top. Second placed Atlético (who also play Champions League on Tuesday) won 3-0 against Deportivo, Griezmann amongst the scorers there, and Real Madrid scraped a last minute 1-2 victory at Las Palmas to remain four points behind Atleti in third. The battle for the fourth Champions League spot is opening up though after Sevilla beat Villarreal 4-2, another brace from Bakambu not enough to prevent defeat. And Celta and Athletic stay in the race as well after they both won, Iago Aspas getting the only goal for the Galicians against Real Sociedad, and Sabin stepping in for the rested Aduríz to score twice in a 3-1 victory over Betis, Rubén Castro notching up a late consolation for the Andalusians.
