Luis Suárez came to the rescue of Barcelona in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter final against Atlético, the Uruguayan striker scoring twice to give the Catalans a 2-1 victory. Fernando Torres had given the visitors the lead, but he will miss the return leg as he was sent off a few minutes later. The following day Real Madrid were unable to find the net at all against Wolfsburg, and they need an epic night in the Bernabeu next week after falling to a 2-0 defeat in Germany. An all Spanish tie on Thursday as well in the Europa League, defending champions Sevilla coming from a goal down to beat Athletic Bilbao 1-2. Aduríz put the Basques in front with his ninth of the competition, but strikes by Kolo and Iborra turned the scoreline around. Meanwhile Villarreal are marginal favourites to reach the semi-finals after they beat Sparta Prague 2-1, Bakambu getting both goals for Marcelino’s team.

Barcelona faltered in the league again though at the weekend, and they have now only picked up one point from their last three games after they lost 1-0 at Real Sociedad. Atlético are now just three points behind them, Torres and Griezmann on target as they came back to beat Espanyol 1-3, and Real Madrid stay a point below their city rivals after they won 4-0 against Eibar, Ronaldo in particular clocking up his thirtieth league goal of the season as the Merengues scored all their goals before the break. On Sunday Villarreal consolidated fourth spot with a 2-0 victory over Getafe, Bakambu again on the scoresheet, and Celta stay eight points behind them in fifth, Nolito getting the only goal in a 0-1 win at Sporting. Athletic remain one below the Galicians after they beat Rayo 1-0, Williams the scorer there, but Sevilla lose ground on the teams above them after they lost 2-1 at Valencia, Gameiro’s goal not enough to prevent defeat after Parejo and Negredo netted for the Ches. Betis edged towards safety though after a 1-0 victory against Levante, Rubén Castro yet again their saviour, and they are now level with Valencia and Deportivo, who lost 1-3 to Las Palmas on Monday night, despite taking the lead at the start of the second half through Lucas Pérez.
