Spain rule in Europe yet again! Three out of the four finalists in the European competitions will be from La Liga, both Madrid teams winning through to face each other in the Champions League final for the second time in three years, and Sevilla reaching the Europa League final for the third season in a row! Atlético knocked out Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich on the away goal rule, Griezmann’s strike making the difference despite a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night. And the following day Real Madrid beat Manchester City 1-0, the only goal in the whole tie coming when Fernando deflected a Bale shot into his own net. Sevilla had a more comfortable 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk though, Gameiro scoring twice and Mariano getting the third to give the Andalusians a shot at a record fifth title. The only downside of the midweek games was Villarreal’s 3-0 defeat at Liverpool, and the Premier League team will be Sevilla’s opponents in ten days’ time.

A massive weekend in the league as well, with Barcelona and Real Madrid battling it out for the title on the final day after they won their respective matches on Sunday. Barça have a one point advantage though after they beat city neighbours Espanyol 5-0, Messi starting things off before the break, Luis Suárez netting twice to take his league tally to 37 (on track for another Golden Boot), and Rafinha and Neymar wrapping things up. Madrid meanwhile won 3-2 against Valencia, Ronaldo helping himself to a brace to stay four goals behind Suárez, and Benzema getting one in-between. Atlético though are out of the race altogether after they surprisingly lost 2-1 at the already relegated Levante, an early strike from Fernando Torres overturned by goals from Casadesús and Rossi.

The fight to avoid the last two relegation spots has been narrowed down to three teams, Getafe, Sporting Gijón and Rayo Vallecano. Getafe and Sporting are level on 36 points after they drew 1-1 on Sunday, although the Madrid based side have the better head-to-head record. Rayo though drop a point below them after they were beaten 2-1 at Real Sociedad, Javi Guerra’s second half strike coming too late to prevent a disastrous defeat. All of that meant that Betis, Espanyol, Deportivo and Granada are safe for another year, good news in fact for Madrid and Barça, who have to face Depor and Granada next Saturday, and also for Getafe, who visit Betis. Rubén Castro, Lucas Pérez and El-Arabi (from the penalty spot) were amongst the scorers in their respective matches. Elsewhere Celta look good for fifth place, which gives direct access to the Europa League, Nolito getting the only goal in a 1-0 win against Málaga. (10.05.16)
