Not the best of times for Spanish clubs in Europe this week. Barcelona were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City on Tuesday despite Messi’s opener, and only a last minute strike by Griezmann (his second of the game) gave Atlético a 2-1 win over unfancied Rostov. On Wednesday Real Madrid struggled to draw 3-3 behind closed doors at Legia Warsaw even though Bale and Benzema put them two up before the break, and only a late goal from Kovacic saved the day. (Incidentally, Kovacic was the 19th player to score for them this season, and only Casemiro, Coentrao and the two goalkeepers have not been on the scoresheet so far!). Sevilla were in fact the only Champions League team to shine, and a 4-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb (Vietto, Escudero, N’Zonzi and Ben Yedder) took them to within a point of qualifying for the knock-out stage. On Thursday Celta and Villarreal both lost their Europa League ties, the former defeated 3-2 by Ajax (late goals for the Galicians by Guidetti and Aspas), and the latter surprisingly beaten 1-2 by Osmanlispor, Rodri the scorer for the locals. Aduríz did make up for all that though with a record five goals, including three penalties, in a 5-3 victory over Genk which puts the Basque side back on track for a place in the next round. Lopetegui immediately recalled him to the Spanish squad, although he said he would have done so anyway without the “manita”.

Meanwhile the big two are opening a bit of a gap on the rest in the league, Real Madrid staying two points clear at the top after a 3-0 victory over neighbours Leganés. Bale started things off with a brace late on in the first half, and Morata added the third after the restart. Barcelona are still second after they came back from a goal down to beat fourth placed Sevilla 1-2, Messi cancelling out Vitolo’s opener (his 500th club goal including friendlies) and then setting up Luis Suárez for the winner after the break, and they are now three points above third place, currently occupied by Villarreal after they beat Betis 2-0. Atlético drop to fourth though after they lost 2-0 at Real Sociedad, Vela and Willian José both converting penalties to consolidate sixth place. Elsewhere Sandro was on target for the third match in a row as Málaga beat Sporting Gijón 3-2 on Friday night to move up in to the top half of the table. (07.11.16)
