More European games this week, Atlético Madrid and Sevilla both winning their Champions League fixtures to move closer to a place in the quarter finals. Atlético beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 on Tuesday with strikes from Saúl Ñíguez, Griezmann, Gameiro (from the penalty spot) and Fernando Torres, and Sevilla won 2-1 against Leicester City on Wednesday, Sarabia and Correa the scorers there. On Thursday though Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal both bowed out of the Europa League, the former losing 2-0 to APOEL Nicosia and the latter losing 1-4 on aggregate to Roma despite a 0-1 victory in their second leg, Santos Borré getting the only goal in the Olympic stadium. That only left Celta, and they too seemed to be on the way out at Shakhtar Donetsk before a controversial last minute Iago Aspas penalty took the tie to extra time, and Cabral headed the winner with twelve minutes to go.

Excitement at the weekend, the top three all winning their respective matches late on. Real Madrid were two down at Villarreal on Sunday with half an hour to go, but headers from Bale and Morata, and a Ronaldo penalty in between, turned the scoreline around. Earlier in the day Barcelona visited fourth placed Atlético, Messi once again getting the winner late on after Godín had cancelled out Rafinha’s opener. And on Saturday Sevilla came from behind to beat city rivals Betis 1-2, Mercado and Iborra getting the goals after Durmisi had given the hosts a first half lead.

Meanwhile the fight for the remaining European spots is wide open, with several teams still in the running. Real Sociedad distanced themselves from the rest with a 0-1 victory at Las Palmas, but Athletic and Eibar are now just a point below sixth placed Villarreal after both won, Valverde’s side beating Granada 3-1, and their neighbours winning 3-0 against Málaga, Adrián González scoring twice either side of half time (the second from the penalty spot), and Sergi Enrich adding the third a couple of minutes later. Espanyol are ninth after a 3-0 victory against bottom club Osasuna, Gerard Moreno wrapping things up late on, and Celta drop just below the Catalans after a 1-1 draw at Sporting, Iago Aspas once again salvaging a point with a late free kick.
