Lots of goals in the cup this week, nowhere more so than at Villarreal, where the locals put eight past Almería, with four from Ekambi, two from Bacca, and one more from Gerard Moreno (although it didn’t save coach Javier Calleja after they lost again at the weekend). Most of the big names were of course rested at this stage, but there was a hat-trick for Getafe’s Angel against Córdoba, and two each for Aduríz and Williams as Athletic repeated last week’s 4-0 scoreline against Huesca. Goals as well for Lo Celso (Betis), Charles (Eibar), Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad) and André Silva (Sevilla).

.Messi was on brilliant form again at the weekend, scoring two fantastic free kicks against city neighbours Espanyol, one in each of the top corners of the net. Dembélé and Luis Suárez were also on target as Barça won 0-4 to open up a three point gap at the top. With Sevilla drawing 1-1 at Valencia (another goal by Sarabia for them), Atlético are now joint second after a 3-0 victory over Alavés, Griezmann scoring the second for Simeone’s side. Alavés drop to fifth, below Real Madrid after an early Bale strike gave them a narrow 0-1 win at bottom club Huesca. Bacca scored two more late on for Villarreal, but not enough to prevent a 2-3 defeat to Celta (as referred to above) after Maxi Gómez had put the Galicians three up. Elsewhere Charles got two for Eibar in a high scoring 4-4 draw against Levante, Oyarzabal got Real Sociedad’s goal as they lost 1-2 to Valladolid, and Lo Celso converted a penalty for Betis against Rayo to take the Andalusians level with Levante in joint sixth place.
