Barcelona are the only Spanish side left in the Champions League after Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid were knocked out at the round of 16 stage! Both were hopeful after first leg victories, but Real Madrid were beaten 1-4 at home by Ajax, Marco Asensio’s goal not enough to prevent a humiliating defeat. And the following week Atlético saw their 2-0 first leg lead against Juventus overturned by a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, a man who their city rivals sorely miss! Barça however cruised through with a 5-1 victory over Olympique Lyon, Messi scoring twice (including a penalty), and Coutinho, Piqué and Dembélé getting the other three.

In the Europa League, Valencia made it through thanks to a late goal by Guedes after Rodrigo’s two goals from the first leg had been cancelled out by Krasnodar. And Villarreal are also into the quarter finals after an aggregate 5-2 win over Zenit, Iborra, Gerard Moreno and Morlanes scoring in the away leg, and Moreno and Bacca on target in the return. Sevilla though are out of their favourite competition after losing to Slavia Prague in extra time, Ben Yedder and Munir scoring in both legs, and Franco Vázquez seemingly taking them through before the Czech team scored twice late on.

The big three all won in the league in week 27 though, Messi and Luis Suárez on target for Barça in a 3-1 win against Rayo, with Raúl De Tomás replying for the visitors, Saúl scoring the only goal from Atlético against Leganés, and Benzema netting a brace for Real Madrid at Valladolid. Elsewhere Ben Yedder helped himself to a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory against Real Sociedad, with Oyarzabal scoring two at one end and one at the other, and the on-form Mata also scored twice for Getafe.

In week 28, Barcelona extended their lead at the top thanks to a brilliant hat-trick by Messi and a fourth goal by Luis Suárez at Betis, whereas Atlético lost 2-0 at Athletic Bilbao, with Williams on target there. Zidane returned at Real Madrid to lead them to a 2-0 win over Celta, with Bale and Isco the scorers, and Caparrós was back at Sevilla, who won 0-1 at Espanyol thanks to a Ben Yedder penalty.
