Mixed results for Spanish sides in the midweek Champions League, with Barcelona unable to score a single goal in the Nou Camp for the first time in a year and a half after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Slavia Prague. Valencia put four past Lille though after going a goal down, Parejo netting his sixth penalty of the season, and Real Madrid hit Galatasay for six on Wednesday, with youngster Rodrygo scoring a hat-trick on his first start in the competition, and Benzema notching up two more. Not such good news for Atlético though, who were beaten 2-1 by Bayer Leverkusen, although Morata’s last minute strike did at least swing the head-to-head goal average in their favour. Sevilla and Espanyol also clocked up big scores in Thursday’s Europa League, with Munir getting a hat-trick and Dabbur two more for the former at Dudelange, and six different players, including Vargas, Campuzano and Ferreyra scoring for the latter against nine-man Ludogorets. Getafe lost 2-1 at Basel though, a Mata penalty not enough to prevent a second defeat in a row against the Swiss side.

Messi might not have scored on Tuesday, but he certainly made up for it at the weekend with a house-special hat-trick (a penalty and two free kicks) against Celta to keep his team at the top of the table, albeit level with Real Madrid, who also put four past Eibar. Benzema got two of those, and he currently heads up our Liga Pichichi. Messi though is already a goal behind him together with Gerard Moreno and Loren, whose goal against city rivals Sevilla couldn’t prevent a painful defeat against for Betis the old enemy Sevilla. Elsewhere Lucas Pérez set a new record for Alavés with his seventh goal in a row, and Morata got his sixth in all competitions to keep Atlético ahead of Sevilla in third place. (11.11.19)
