The bad tempered clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the two-leg Spanish Super Cup, and in particular the brawl which occurred at the end of the second leg in the Nou Camp, has contributed to the fact that our opening "Villains" chart is almost entirely made up of players from those two teams. Marcelo was sent off late in in that game for hacking down Fàbregas, and in the ensuing melee, Villa and Özil were both given red cards for hitting out at opponents. The most talked about action though was that of our old friend José Mourinho, who was pushed by Barça assistant coach Tito Villanueva, and responded by sneaking up behind him afterwards and sticking a finger in his eye! There has been talk of the Federation opening an investigation, although so far nothing has come of it.

So to the opening weekend, and there were two red cards in the first match of the season, with Real Sociedad's Carlos Martínez sent off after giving away a penalty midway through the second half, and Sporting's Lora also getting his marching orders for a second bookable offence near the end. After that though there was only one red card for Racing's physical trainer Angel Puebla, who pushed the linesman when he got a bit overheated about a substitution his side were waiting to make. That was not taken well by the disciplinary committee though, who handed out a four match ban for the incident. You can see (and insult?) but not touch! (31.08.11)
