No less than nine red cards in this weekend's round of games, by far the highest of the season to date. Five of those came in the opening two matches on Saturday, with Sevilla's Trochowski picking up two bookings in the second half against Valencia and then team-mate Escudé following him down the tunnel after giving away a penalty, and finally Aduríz also being shown a straight red for a retaliatory stamp on the foot of Spahic (if he ever touched him?). Right over to the North West Athletic's Ekiza got his marching orders after picking up a second yellow late on against Villarreal, and after the final whistle his assistant coach Vivas got a red card and a two match ban for telling the officials they weren't fit to appear in the top flight.

Later in the day it was Di María's turn to be sent off for a second bookable offence against Rayo, the fifth red card for a Real Madrid player in all competitions this season, and on Sunday three were three reds for Espanyol players and staff against Levante, Jordi Amat the first to go after giving away a penalty on Rubén Suárez, Pandiani next off for an off-the-ball incident with Nano (head-butt from behind?), and the medical assistant for protesting a bit too much from the touchline (which earned him a two match suspension as well).
