Seven red cards in the midweek round of games postponed from week 20, with tempers hotting up as the end of the season approaches. Sporting Gijón coach Javier Clemente may have directed his last match for the club as he was given a two match ban after being shown a red card for his protests in the game against Villarreal, and the visitors' reserve keeper César was also red-carded for arguing with the home fans who were sitting behind the dug-out shortly before the final whistle. Osasuna's Lekic couldn't contain himself after a couple of previous confrontations with Valencia's Rami, and his was sent off for punching his opponent in an off-the-ball incident shortly before half time. That provoked a general protest, and local medical assistant Del Villar was sent to the stands as a result. And in the Andalusian derby, a red card for Sevilla's Medel for a second bookable offence near the end also sparked off a bit of handbag swinging, Medel himself given a three match suspension for suggesting the unpleasant thinks he would like to do to the referee's mother after he was sent off! The Chilean midfielder now heads up our chart, and although he will not feature again this season, he is looking good for our "Villains" award this season.

Elsewhere Atlético's Gabi and Athletic's Javi Martínez were both sent off for second bookable offences in their respective games. Martínez in particular was unfortunate to be given a second yellow card in the match against Real Madrid when he ball hit his bandaged hand from close range, and given that his hand was obviously giving him pain it is unlikely that he would have deliberately put it in the way of the cross! Athletic probably won't appeal though as they needed to rest him anyway before the two cup finals. All will be joined on the sidelines in the next to last weekend of the season by 15 players who completed the five yellow card cycle, including Casado (Rayo) and Botía (Sporting) who picked up their fifteenth bookings of the season, Beñat (Betis), Valera (Getafe), Ramis (Mallorca), and Damià (Osasuna), who were given their tenth, and Dorado and Cañas (Betis), Rafa (Getafe), Cabral (Levante), Roversio (Osasuna), Coentrao and Özil (Real Madrid), Negredo (Sevilla) and Marchena (Villarreal), who were all shown their fifth.
