An intense cup tie between Barcelona and Real Madrid midweek, with a red card near the end for Sergio Ramos after picking up a second booking. Two more sendings off in the cup, Mallorca's Chico showing his frustrations with a hard tackle on Athletic's Susaeta near the end of their tie, and Levante's new signing Oscar Serrano also getting his marching orders against city rivals Valencia for a second bookable offence. Under Federation rules, all three will have to serve out their one match bans in the first round of the cup next season as their respective teams have been eliminated.

Six red cards at the weekend, including one each for Valencia's Ricardo Costa and Racing's Munitis as players clashed at the end of their bad-tempered match. Mallorca's Aouate can consider himself unlucky to be sent off in the game at Espanyol, the keeper appearing to get the ball as he came out of his area to clear from Rui Fonte. Mallorca will appeal. Getafe's Lopo was shown a straight red near the end of the game at Levante after he blocked Iborra's shot on the line with his arm, and Málaga's Isco had to go for a second bookable offence in the local derby against Sevilla. And finally Villarreal's medical assistant was also sent to the stands for protesting in the match against Barcelona. All will miss the next round of fixtures, as will Nacho (Betis), Sergio Sánchez (Málaga), Toño and Cisma (Racing), Spahic (Sevilla) and Feghouli (Valencia), who completed the five yellow card cycle at the weekend (in the case of Spahic for the second time this season). (31.01.12)

PS. Munitis was let off his red card - a case of mistaken identity it seems, but the appeals committee upheld the referee's decision on Aouate due to lack of clear evidence in contra. (01.02.12)
