The talking point this weekend was Piqué's red card right at the start of the second half of Barcelona's game against Sporting Gijón. The Spanish international defender bundled over De las Cuevas as he approached the area, and although the red card was quite harsh, it didn't merit Piqué's outburst after the match that it was a pre-meditated act by referee Velasco Carballo. The president of the referees' association has denounced Piqué to the disciplinary committee, and it remains to be seen what will be the outcome (see also our "White Stick" section). Only two other red cards this weekend, one for Zaragoza's physical trainer for protesting, and one for Racing Santander keeper Toño, who got his marching orders in only the second minute of the game at Rayo Vallecano for a foul outside of the area on Diego Costa. All will have to serve out a one match ban next weekend, and they will be joined by no less than 17 players who reached the five yellow card threshold, including Forlín (Espanyol), Jara (Granada), Medel (Sevilla) and Paredes (Zaragoza), who all picked up their tenth bookings of the season, and Filipe Luis (Atlético), Pereira (Betis), Weiss (Espanyol), Siqueira, Dani Benítez and Fran Rico (Granada), Juanfran and Iborra (Levante), Timor (Osasuna), Diego Costa (Rayo), Carvalho (Real Madrid), Cadamuro (Real Sociedad) and Eguren (Sporting), who were all given their fifth. The 83 yellow cards shown this weekend (an average of 8.3 a game!) was in fact something of a record. (07.03.12)
