A season high eleven red cards in the midweek round of games, with no less than five coming for Real Madrid's players and staff in the 1-1 draw at Villarreal. Sergio Ramos got his marching orders for a second bookable offence, a record eleventh red card of his career, and Özil was sent off for "cynically applauding" a decision by Paradas Romero and (according to the referee's report) standing too close to my person! Funnily he doesn't say who his person is? Before that though Rui Faria was sent to the stands, also for ironical applause, the assistant coach's fourth red card of the season, and Mourinho followed him a few minutes later after picking up two yellow cards for protesting and "stepping outside of the designated area". All of that upset Pepe so much that he insulted the referee (or more to the point his mother) after the game ended, and he too was shown a red card.

Elsewhere Barcelona's Dani Alves was sent for an early bath after getting two bookings, both for giving away penalties against Granada, and Real Sociedad's Elustondo was also red carded for a second bookable offence. Real's utility man (the one with the balls) was sent off as well for protesting later on. Zaragoza ended with nine men against Valencia after Pablo Alvarez was shown a straight red and Zuculini picked up two bookings, but they still managed to come from behind to beat Emery's side. And on Thursday Racing's Diop was shown a straight red card for what the referee reported as a kick on an opponent. On top of all that another 15 players completed the five yellow card cycle, with Gabi (Atlético), Nekounam (Osasuna) and Alvaro (Racing) all picking up their tenth bookings of the season, and San José (Athletic), Juanfran (Atlético), Moreno (Espanyol), Pedro López and Botelho (Levante), Lass (Real Madrid), Estrada (Real Sociedad), Canella and Nacho Cases (Sporting), Barragán (Valencia) and Lafita (Zaragoza) all receiving their fifth. It's a wonder there will be anyone left to play next weekend!.. (23.03.12)

PS The appeals committee let Sergio Ramos off one of his yellow cards due to a technicality, and he will be allowed to play at the weekend. Pepe was also let off a first yellow card, but he still got a two match ban for insulting the referee, as did Rui Faria and the Real Sociedad utility man. Racing's Diop was also pardoned after the committee reviewed video evidence. (24.03.12)
