Valencia’s Mustafi set something of an unwanted record this week, and he now has to serve out bans in three different competitions over the next ten days! The German international defender was sent off shortly before half time in the midweek cup semi-final at Barcelona for giving away a penalty on Messi, and he will be suspended for the return leg next Wednesday. Then on Sunday he picked up a tenth booking of the season, which means he misses next weekend’s league game against Espanyol. And he will also be absent for the Europa League tie against Rapid Vienna the following week as he was shown a third yellow card in his team’s last match in the Champions League. Ah well, maybe Gary Neville will let him take a few days off to sit on a beach somewhere?

Quite a busy week for the disciplinary committee though, with four red cards, and another twelve players suspended for accumulation of yellows. Athletic’s Williams and Villarreal’s Bonera were the first to go on Saturday for second bookable offences in a match which saw twelve yellow cards shown in all, and Valencia’s Gayà was also sent to run the bathwater for the same reason at Betis on Sunday. And Sevilla’s prodigal son Fazio only lasted a quarter of the match at Celta later in the evening before he picked up two cautions, not quite the return he was looking for after his time at Tottenham. It seems he is a repeat offender though, as he apparently was also sent off on his debut for Spurs! Elsewhere Recio will have to sit out Málaga’s next game as he picked up his tenth booking of the season, and he will be joined on the sidelines by San José (Athletic), Pezzella (Betis), Sergi Gómez, Bongonda and Iago Aspas (all Celta), Juncà (Eibar), Lacen (Getafe), Miguel Lopes (Granada), Jefferson Lerma (Levante) and André Gomes (Valencia), all of whom were shown their fifth.
