We knew it was not going to last! Not one red card for an outfield player in the first two weeks of the new season, but this weekend we made up for it with five, the first on Friday night when Espanyol’s Javi Fuego picked up a second booking near the end of the match at Real Sociedad! Osasuna’s Tano and Las Palmas defender Bigas followed for similar reasons on Saturday at Real Madrid and Sevilla respectively, and the Las Palmas assistant coach Ener Sarabia was also sent to the stands for protesting. And on Sunday there were two straight reds, Eibar goalkeeper Riesgo for a foul outside of the area on Granada’s Ponce with only just over half an hour on the clock, and Valencia’s Enzo Pérez for a hard tackle on Betis full back Durmisi early on in the second half of their match. Subject to appeal, all will serve out one game suspensions next weekend. (12.09.16)

PS One of the two yellow cards shown to Bigas was cancelled on appeal, and so his one match ban has been rescinded.

(* suspension pending disciplinary meeting decision)
