This season goalkeepers are proving to be worse villains than those old cloggers in the back four, Sevilla’s Sirigu the fourth to be sent off after lashing out at Aduríz with his elbow near the end of the match at Athletic Bilbao. The Italian keeper was probably unlucky that the referee awarded a penalty as well instead of a free kick the other way, as Aduríz had clattered in to him with a clumsy challenge, and the veteran striker certainly overacted, but there was no question about the red card. Three more players also sent off this weekend, Real Sociedad’s Aritz Elustondo the first to go for blocking a header from Eibar’s Bebé with his arm midway through the first half of their Saturday lunchtime match. The decision was very harsh though as the defender virtually had no time to react, the ball hitting him at point-blank range. Later in the day Sporting’s Lora picked up two yellow cards with a quarter of an hour to go against Barcelona, the second for a foul on Sergi Roberto who had been turning him inside out all afternoon, and on Sunday Deportivo’s Fayçal Fajr got his marching orders for a second bookable offence after rash tackles on Atlético’s Gaitán and Koke towards the end of the first half of their match in Madrid. PS. Sirigu was given a two match ban, all the rest one. (29.09.16)
