Some controversial refereeing in the midweek cup games, not least of which in Cornellà, where Mateu Lahoz turned down two good penalty appeals from Mirandés players, and then allowed Espanyol's Weiss to pick up a long clearance in an offside position to run on and score. That started Espanyol's come-back, although they are still not out of the woods after the match finished 3-2. Muñiz Fernández was given the hot potato of a tie between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and both he and his linesmen failed to spot Pepe's cynical stamp on Messi's hand whilst the Barça player was on the ground. TV cameras did pick it up, but the disciplinary committee decided not to take further action. And in the match between Athletic Bilbao and Mallorca, González González incorrectly ruled out a strike by Susaeta for offside, again cameras showing that he was at least two metres on-side. It didn't matter that much as Athletic were already winning 2-0, but if Mallorca come back next week it could be a crucial decision. Things were quieter at the weekend though, and apart from a few "was it? - wasn't it?" penalty decisions there was not a lot to complain about. (25.01.12)
