Muñiz Fernández got us off to a bad start this week, a couple of his decisions seriously influencing the outcome of the Friday night game between Espanyol and Sevilla. First of all there were two penalties, the initial one for a foul by Navarro on Verdú generally thought by the experts to be OK, but the second when Kondogbia suddenly fell over with only "the masked man" Stuani anyway near him a mystery to all. One can only imagine that Stuani's face mask turned him in to the cartoon character "the Shadow", who used his mind tricks to make the midfielder fall over by himself! Penalty it certainly was not! Anyway, that was only half of it as Muñiz sent off Reyes after showing him a second yellow card for taking a free kick without his permission (see our "Villains" section for further explanations). Again his decision was baffling as everybody heard a whistle to start play, but nobody heard a second whistle to stop it again. Mass hypnotism, a dog whistle which humans can't hear, we are all dying to hear what was the referee's explanation? The disciplinary committee couldn't fathom it out at all though and overturned the second card, and Muñiz was suddenly removed as referee of the Osasuna v Valencia cup-tie. Looks like he's on for a spell in the fridge, as they call it over here! (12.12.12)
