Some big games this weekend as the season comes to a close, but our men in black were relatively quiet and well behaved, as is their wont in recent seasons. Undiano Mallenco turned down penalty appeals at both ends in the Barcelona derby, for a possible hand ball by Piqué, and a possible foul by Espanyol’s Gerard Moreno on Luis Suárez, and Gil Manzano gave a soft penalty to Real Madrid after Modric fell under a challenge from Valencia’s Dani Parejo, which only served for Diego Alves to save a spot kick from Ronaldo for the third time in four. Nothing too controversial however, and we only hope it continues to the end of the season. Not like the old days any more, but seriously though we are delighted that Spanish referees have turned the leaf, and we look forward to many years of arbitrary cognisance in an atmosphere of convivial enlightenment. There again though that might just be a load of old bollocks… (03.05.17)
