Confirmation as expected that Villarreal’s Sergio Asenjo has not recovered in time to complete the minimum 25 games to qualify for the “Zamora” award, and he drops out of our table this week. Oblak therefore is all but mathematically sure of taking the title for the second year in a row. Asenjo’s replacement Andrés Fernández was one of four keepers to clock up a clean sheet in the penultimate weekend of the season, a 0-0 draw against Lux’s Deportivo maintaining the Yellow Submarine’s fifth spot and ensuring another season in the top flight for the Galicians. That meant that Cuéllar’s efforts in Sporting’s 0-1 victory at Eibar were all in vain, and the Asturians will be going down. Earlier in the weekend Jaume Domenech kept his goals against column to zero in a 0-1 win at Espanyol, although both teams were already safe some time ago, and Jaume was given his second run-out in a row by Voro.

Elsewhere there were several changes between the sticks, Eibar’s Riesgo coming in for Yoel in that game against Sporting, Keylor Navas returning again for Real Madrid under Zidane’s rotation policy, and youngster Iván Villar making his debut for Celta as Berizzo rested Sergio Alvarez following that epic Europa League semi-final at Old Trafford. And Champagne was brought in by Leganés for only his third appearance since joining in the winter as first choice keeper Herrerín was not allowed to play at Athletic Bilbao under the loan agreement between the two clubs. Mr. Bubbly did his bit though, and the Madrid based team managed a 1-1 draw which keeps them in the first division despite being clear favourites for the drop at the start of the season. (15.05.17)

PS Granada’s “Memo” Ochoa set something of an unwanted record after he let in his eightieth of the league season against Osasuna. The Mexican keeper has played in every match so far, and he beats the previous record of 79 set by Salamanca’s Aizpurúa over 20 years ago.
