Heroes and Villains 2004/2005
Eto'o Pichichi

A surprise on the last day of the season, with Diego Forlán scoring twice to overtake Samuel Eto'o and win this year's official Pichichi prize. The Barcelona striker was in the lead for almost all of the season, but ran out of steam near the end and allowed Forlán to catch him in the end (thanks in part to a controversially "disallowed goal" which the organizers took off him). Eto'o wins Soccer-Spain's prize though, based on all competitions, with 24 goals in the league and four in Europe.

Forlán was cup-tied for Europe after appearing for Manchester United before his transfer, and his 25 goals tied him for second spot in our chart with two Sevilla based Brazilians, Betis's Oliveira, who helped his side to an excellent season in his first year with the club, and Sevilla's Baptista, who had another excellent year which ended with him moving to Real Madrid. His new team mate Ronaldo could only finish fifth this time around, and from across town Fernando Torres is in sixth spot, the first Spanish player in the table this year.

It was however a low scoring season, with only 980 goals in the league compared to 1,015 in the last two years, an average of 2.58 per match. In all official club games the tally was 1,207, slightly down on last year's 1,292. The highest scoring weekends were weeks 20 and 36 with 36 goals in the ten games, and the lowest were weeks 6 and 32 with 16. See the weekly reports below for more details.

Pablo García Villains

No question of who the top villain was this season, Pablo García already way out in front in our chart before his late red card in the cup final for a vicious tackle on Joaquín set a new record of 32 points for this section. His performance this year caught the eye of non other than Real Madrid, who were looking for a bit more "mala leche" in their side. It remains to be seen whether the Uruguay team captain carries on his antics playing for the Merengues.

Don Pablo is one of several players will sit out the opening matches in the stands as unserved suspensions are carried forward to the beginning of the next campaign, in his case banned for the first two. Mallorca will be without Arango and Luis García and Espanyol will also be missing Jarque. New boys Alavés and Cádiz will also be short of Téllez and Sarriegui and of Varela respectively for the same reason. Furthermore, Zaragoza's Milito and Alvaro will miss the midweek cup game, as will Málaga's César Navas.

There were a total of 2,222 yellow cards and 126 reds in the league and cup this year, well below last season's totals of 2,409 and 168, but still an average of just under 6 yellows and 0.33 reds per game. On a club basis, the top villains over the last two years Sevilla were beaten into third place by Osasuna and Racing, who clocked up 173 points and 141 points respectively. Sevilla ended on 135, followed by Athletic Bilbao and Betis tied on 127. The lowest totals went to Real Sociedad with 78 points, Villarreal with 89 and Deportivo with 90. Valdés Zamoras

For the first time since the legendary Zubizarreta won the Zamora prize some ten years or so ago, a Barcelona goalkeeper has finished top of the pile. The Catalans have tried their luck with several keepers since Zubi hung up his gloves, but in the end it is home grown Víctor Valdés who looks like being his successor.

Once again Pepe Reina played throughout the season, this year the only keeper apart from Levante's Mora to do so, and he will be sorely missed at Villarreal after his move to Liverpool. Kameni only missed twenty minutes or so though due to an injury in the first match, and Leo Franco and Dudu Aouate would have been ever presents had they not been rested for one game at the end of the season. All in all no less than 43 keepers were used by the 20 first division sides, although for once nobody had to resort to an outfield player to fill the gap due to injuries or sendings off.

Megia Dávila White stick award

For the second season in a row Megia Dávila won our white stick award after producing 129 yellow cards and 16 reds in the twenty one games he officiated, down on the 140 and 15 in eighteen games from last year but still an average of 6.9 cards a match. Megia is clearly the top man at the moment having also finished runner up twice in the last five years.

Referees produced a sum total of 2,357 yellow cards and 143 reds in league and cup competitions this season, well down on last season's record haul of 2,528 and 178. Readers can find out more about our men in black from our weekly reports (see below for links), but it seems that there were far fewer controversial incidents than in previous seasons, and given that the players are certainly not better behaved this can only be down to the officials' more professional attitude. Having said that, they are threatening a strike at the start of the season for more pay!

As usual a couple of our favourites will be leaving us this summer, Losantos Omar hanging up his whistle after reaching the retirement age and Carmona Méndez throwing in the towel midway through the season after a couple of controversial incidents caused him to decide it wasn't really worth the bother. They will be replaced by Ayza Gámez and Pérez Lima. We await their debuts with baited breath.....
