Heroes and Villains 2005/2006
Eto'o Pichichi

Samuel Eto'o was not to be denied this year after Diego Forlán pipped him at the post last season, despite a lay-off of several weeks due to the Africas Cup. The Cameroonian striker took the league's "Pichichi" prize thanks to a goal in the very last game of the season at Athletic Bilbao. Eto'o started the extended last weekend a goal ahead of David Villa but the Valencia man got a last second strike at Osasuna to draw level with him in the table. It looked as if the prize would be shared, but Eto'o thought differently and wrapped things up a couple of days later at the San Mamés.

The Barcelona forward had in any case already ensured top spot for the second year running in Soccer-Spain's own chart, based on all official club competitions. And he added to his tally with what was probably the most important goal of his life as Barça beat Arsenal to win the Champions League final for only the second time in their history.

Once again the total number of goals was down on last year, with only 936 goals in the league compared to 980 and 1,015 in the last two years, an average of 2.46 per match. In all official club games the tally was 1,159, also down on last year's 1,207. The highest scoring weekend was week 20 with 35 goals in the ten games, and the lowest were weeks 1, 30 and 33 with 16. See the weekly reports below for more details.

Pablo García Villains

Atlético Madrid midfielder Luccin takes this year's "Villains" prize ahead of Depor's Duscher after finishing second four seasons ago, even though he had to sit out the last match of the season due to a one match ban.

Luccin's new team mate Pernia was sent off playing for Getafe in the last match of the season, and as unserved suspensions are carried forward to the beginning of the next campaign he will have to sit out a one match ban in the first game. He will be joined in the stands by Melli and Edu from Betis, Sergio Sánchez from Espanyol and Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid.

There were a total of 2,352 yellow cards and 167 reds in the league and cup this year, well above last season's totals of 2,222 and 126, and an average of 5.6 yellows and 0.4 reds per game. On a club basis, the top villains last year Osasuna were beaten into third place by Racing Santander, who clocked up 188 points, with Deportivo second on 181 and Osasuna ending with 179 (interesting to see the "Caparrós" effect on Depor, who last season had one of the lowest number of cards). This season the lowest totals went to Barcelona with 106 points, Alavés with 108 and Cádiz with 122. See the weekly reports below for more details.

Valdés Zamoras

A surprise on the goalkeeping front, with Pinto getting ahead of Cañizares on the last weekend of the season to take the "Zamora" prize. Although the Celta keeper didn't let one in against Getafe on last day, Cañizares could still have taken the title for the fifth time if he had opted out of the rescheduled game at Osasuna three days later. But with second place still up for grabs he had to play, and when his opponents put two past him that was it.

Deportivo's Molina was the only keeper to play throughout the season, although Racing's Dudu Aouate would have been ever present as well had he not stepped down in the last match to allow Valencia a final appearance before retiring. All in all no less than 42 keepers were used by the 20 first division sides, although for the second season in a row nobody had to resort to an outfield player to fill the gap due to injuries or sendings off.

Megia Dávila White stick award

González Vázquez takes this year's "White Stick" prize with by far the highest points total in the seven years that we have been adjudicating this award, beating two times winner Megia Dávila into second place. González produced 164 yellow cards and 17 reds in the twenty one games he officiated, an average of 8.6 cards a match, knocking Megía's best of 140 and 15 out of sight.

Referees produced a sum total of 2,399 yellow cards and 171 reds in league and cup competitions this season, up on last season's haul of 2,357 and 143 but well below the record total of 2,528 and 178 from two years ago. Readers can find out more about our men in black from our weekly reports (see below for links), but it seems that efforts by the Federation to professionalize the trade is having it's effect.

Three more referees will be leaving us this summer, Esquinas Torres calling it a day after reaching the retirement age and Puentes Leira and Moreno Delgado both deciding to quit rather than be relegated back to the second division. They will be replaced by Alvarez Izquierdo, Clos Gómez and Delgado Ferreiro. Another exciting year awaits us!
